Who to ride with
All cycling groups are different and they reflect the personalilty of their volunteers, their history and what their
members are looking for. The CTC believes this diversity is very healthy for cycling, but it can make it confusing to
find a suitable group.
Your local CTC group is always a good starting point and they will tell you about other groups in their area. To some extent
you do have to ask around and give a group a try before deciding who is best for you. However, you can check the following
basic points which will help you identify the well organised groups.
- are they affiliated to at least one of the national bodies for groups, such as British Cycling (BC), Cycling Time Trials
(CTT), Audax UK (AUK) and of course Cyclists Touring Club (CTC)?
- can they send you well organised and welcoming material, such as a runs list?
- does the group have its own guidance and rules for leaders? (All CTC runs leaders and Audax UK event organisers fulfill this)
- do they offer third party insurance? (The CTC believes it is an absolute minimum requirement that any group offering rides to the
public must carry public liability insurance. Membership of the CTC includes free 3rd party insurance. Participation in an Audax UK
event will also include 3rd party coverage during the ride, either through your CTC membership, or on payment of a supplement for
temporary AUK membership).
